Editorial - January 2003

1. Father James Chesney and the IRA
In issue number eight of the journal of the Ulster Volunteer Force, Combat, questions where raised over the behaviour of a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. That priest was called Father James Chesney. The article in Combat implicated Chesney in the murder of innocent civilians in the bombing of a small county Londonderry village called Claudy. In that bombing nine innocent people were murdered by members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army.

Amongst those killed were Kathryn Eakin aged eight who at the time was cleaning the windows of the family grocery store. Kathryn was not the only child to be murdered by the IRA as it waged it's futile war here and overseas. The other people murdered by the IRA were: -

  • Joseph McCluskey

  • David Miller

  • James McClelland

  • William Temple

  • Elizabeth McElhinney

  • Rose McLaughlin

  • Patrick Connolly, and

  • Arthur Hone.

Father Chesney was directly involved in that bombing and more than likely other murders in the surrounding area. Combat states "The evidence is truly damning, for this is the same priest who collected two bombs from his local GAA hall were they had been assembled, planted one bomb in Broad Street, Magherafelt and the other in Claudy, resulting in the deaths of a number of civilians." If that is what is known one wonders just what else did this minister of religion get up to?
Some weeks later the rest of the media caught up with Combat when the Assistant Chief Constable of the PSNI Sam Kinkaid released a sensational statement to the waiting media. The main points of his statement are as follows: -

  1. Three bombs were planted in Claudy on the 31st July 1972 killing nine people and injuring over thirty.

  2. He commissioned a review in August following the 30th anniversary of the attack.

  3. In a search of 1972 papers, information has been found which clearly indicates that a parish priest in the south Derry area was a member of the Provisional IRA and was actively involved in the Claudy bomb.

  4. Records show he provided an alibi for a person suspected of playing a prominent role in the atrocity.

  5. A member of the public briefed both a senior police officer and the then cardinal of the Catholic Church on the role of the priest not long after the bombing.

  6. In November 1972 the police briefed the Northern Ireland Office.

  7. On the 5th December that same year the then Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, William Whitelaw met Cardinal Conway.

  8. Whitelaw gave the Cardinal a full account of his disgust at the behaviour of Chesney.

  9. Conway indicated that he knew Chesney was behaving improperly.
Chesney was later transferred to Donegal to carry out his pastoral duties. What is not known is what else he got up to when there!

What we have here is an astonishing cover up between the Government and the Catholic Church of unbelievable proportions. In recent years Sinn Fein/IRA and others in the broader Nationalist/Republican community have been portraying themselves as THE victims of the troubles. Yet here we have nine people murdered in cold blood by the IRA, a bombing carried out by a Priest and covered up by the most senior catholic cleric in the island of Ireland. Surely this is a scandal, which MUST be fully investigated, in the form of a full public enquiry. The Catholic Church, the Government, the Police and Martin McGuinness (as leader of the IRA) must all state clearly and honestly their role in this disgraceful episode in our troubles. Their answers are awaited. I suspect however that it will be brushed under the carpet as it might upset Martin and his murderous band of child killers.
NB - Doesn't it all sound incredibly familiar - the Catholic Church hiding those who have clearly broken not only the Ten Commandments but also the law of the land? The number of priests who have been hidden after it has been discovered that they have abused children in their pastoral care will never be known. The Catholic Church MUST realise that all these people are victims and that they are not above the law of the land.

2. Census 2001

Many from outside Northern Ireland will wonder why this is included in an editorial for 03. Let me explain. For some within these six counties if you are a Protestant you are a labelled a Unionist and if you are a Catholic you are labelled a nationalist. Some believe that this is a "good rule of the thumb" as my granny used to say, fair enough. I think they are wrong.

In 2001 the census in Northern Ireland was completed along with the rest of the United Kingdom. The most important figure for many, as I have said was a basic sectarian headcount i.e. how many Protestants are there and therefore will want the union with Great Britain continue and how many Catholics are there and therefore will want a 32 county Ireland. These people quite simply have no understanding of what this conflict is all about.

Mitchel McLaughlin the Sinn Fein Chairman was one of those who predicted that the number of Protestants would fall below 50% for the first time. He stated, "It is understandable that unionists are nervous and unsure about the future given the demographic trend, but refusal to accept change will not prevent it." Here was a political party who portrays Protestants as sectarian bigots when all it does is count how many Catholics there are and state that all are nationalists. How nakedly sectarian can you get? This exposes how pathetic the understanding of the situation is by Sinn Fein.

Sinn Fein signed the Good Friday Agreement as their policy of ethnic cleansing against the British presence in Northern Ireland was bankrupt, immoral and had no justification. They sold the republican constituency the line; it's only a matter of time before we outbreed them (the Protestants)! Their target was and is 2016, 100 years since the Easter Uprising. Prior to the release of the religious breakdown of the Northern Ireland population on the 19th December 2002 speculation was rife in the press that the Catholic population would make up perhaps as much as 46% of the overall population and that the number of Protestants would be less than 50% with the remainder of other or no religion. The hope was that the gap would be narrow and that 2016 was perhaps a realistic target for Sinn Fein.

The Belfast Telegraph fell into the same trap as Sinn Fein. It's headlines screamed the population breakdown: -

  • Protestant - 53%

  • Catholic - 44%

  • Others - 3%

It's graphics even had Protestants in orange and Catholics in green. How pathetic can you get! Sinn Fein must have been extremely disappointed that there were so many Protestants in the country. They certainly were not expecting that result! However if you beyond the naked sectarian Sinn Fein head count it gets even worse for the Shinners.

On one of the excellent murals on the Newtownards Road in Belfast carries the simple message this conflict is about nationality - Irish out. It is a widely held opinion that perhaps as many as 20% of Catholics have no interest in becoming part of a united Ireland particularly under the socialist terms that Sinn Fein want. That amounts to 150,000 additional people who want to remain in the UK, another 8% or so of the overall total. That makes the overall total wishing to remain in the UK approximately 61% or perhaps even more. In reality the pan nationalist front had better get used to living in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for a very long time to come.

3. Members of the Government Equip and Train a Private Army

Close your eyes and pretend you are in any other democratic country and read the headlines above. It would be one of the biggest scandals ever, the Government would collapse, searches would be carried out, arrests made etc.
That's what would happen in any other country but ours. Both the British and Irish governments have both said publicly that Sinn Fein/IRA continue to buy guns, train their men etc. It's alright they tell us it's not for use only just in case they are required. Oh silly me that's alright then, lets get back to having Martin as Minister for Education and Barbara as Minister for Health. Who cares that the IRA is better equipped than the Irish army? Who cares if the IRA operates protection rackets? Who cares if the IRA shoot and kill Catholics?
For gawd sake have Blair and Ahern no balls! Boot Sinn Fein out and let democratic politicians get on with the job. That's what the people want.

4. Parity of Esteem

In Northern Ireland there are state schools for all the children of our country to attend. The Catholic Church however since 1921 have had their own schools, preaching their own doctrine etc. Catholics can teach in both schools, Protestants cannot teach in Catholic schools, why? Where is the parity of esteem, the level playing field etc? If you are a Protestant in our wee country you are discriminated against if you wish to teach, join the police or take up civilian jobs that assist the police. Is this fair? Of course not but it's Government policy. The human rights of Protestants are ignored to satisfy the Catholic Church and the pan nationalist front.

Finally, best wishes for 03 from all at the shop.
